Before Starlink (pre-2020), HughesNet provided GEO satellite internet with speeds up to 25 Mbps down/3 Mbps up, 600+ ms latency, and strict data caps (10-50 GB/mo, then throttled to 1-3 Mbps). Subscriptions: $50-150/mo with 2-year contracts. Installation: $99-199. Equipment: Lease $10-15/mo or buy ~$450. Starlink (2025): LEO tech offers 50-300+ Mbps, 20-40 ms latency, unlimited data (deprioritized after 1TB). $120/mo, no contract. Equipment: $349 one-time, self-install.

@theschnell3y @28delayslater Those people who bought / used Starlink could also have used HughesNet. Starlink has some advantages and downsides just like HughesNet style sat services do. In terms of emergency comms there is little difference.

@TJAllisonGolf @Starlink voip already works fine over starlink. verizon supports wifi calling (which is a voip implementation). it is much easier to use that, since you already have it and its free (as part of your verizon service), than to set up a separate account just for voip (which will have a separate number). i have used voip even over hughesnet, years ago, with almost a second latency.

@Hughesnet Run fast and far away from @Hughesnet . Horrible company through and through. Customer service does not know how to read a credit card statement, and they will double and triple bill your payment method. Not to mention they lie about their speeds. I have had faster dial up

@SERobinsonJr Meanwhile @Delta is busy bragging about adding HughesNet satellite internet service to their fleet...

@financialthing @ElephantSignal No. Doesn't fail in storms or snow. The legs are securely fastened to the roof. It's been there by itself for 3 1/2 years through wildfires and storms. It has internal snow melting, unlike my previous HughesNet.
